TBT: The Alleghany Rattler May 1971: Big Doings are Being Planned for Anniversary

Editor’s Note:  As part of our year-long celebration of our 100th Year Anniversary (1922-2022), we’ll post a Throwback Thursday edition of our Alleghany Rattler Newspaper to give you a peek into life at camp across those 100 summers!

In this piece camp gets ready to celebrate its 50th summer (1922 being the first making 1971 the 50th.) The next few rattler throwbacks will focus on that summer’s events.

Big Doings are Being Planned for Anniversary

Camp Alleghany will celebrate 50 years of operation in August 1971. As you all know, the camp was founded by Dr. Hullinen and the Worthingtons in 1922, and 1971 is the 50th year of operation.

We are planning big doings at Camp Alleghany in August and you will receive an invitation to come and see the girls on August 10, 11, and then stay over on August 12, for a gathering of former counselors, campers, and alumnae.

We will have a horse show Tuesday afternoon, August 10, followed by a Candlelight Campfire that night. All comers will be our guests at a picnic supper Tuesday night.

Wednesday, August 11, will mark the banquet, and as you probably remember, it is a most busy day at Alleghany. You are all cordially urged to come and visit and to have a picnic lunch with us that day, but unfortunately, we will not have room for everybody to come to the dinner that evening.

You will be welcomed at the banquet ceremony which will start at 7:30 P.M., in the Playhall, or if we have a large crowd it will be outdoors.

On Thursday, August 12, the girls will go home that morning, and then all alumnae and former counselors are invited to move into camp as our guests for a couple of days, or as long as you can stay. We will provide the usual tents, showers, food, and all facilities, but you must bring your blankets and everything else as you did when you were campers or counselors.

We do plan a program on Thursday, August 12 for all old campers and counselors, and we are looking forward to a large crowd. Old folks, young folks, everybody come, come to Camp Alleghany and celebrate our 50th year in August 1971.
