Facilities Updates & News: What’s New Around Camp This Summer

One of our favorite things about camp is that it is always evolving. While the traditions and spirit of Alleghany remain deeply rooted, there are always projects, improvements, repairs, and exciting updates happening behind the scenes to help camp function smoothly and beautifully for our campers and staff.

As we prepare for another summer on the Greenbrier, here are a few of the updates and improvements you can expect to see around camp this year!

Tennis Courts Project Progress

Our long-term tennis courts project continues to move forward! While the new courts are not yet ready for use this summer, campers and families will definitely notice progress.

Currently, two of the new courts have drainage base and gravel in place, and additional drainage work for the overall court complex is ongoing. Campers may occasionally see work being done in this area throughout the summer.

Most importantly: don’t worry — we still have three fully functional tennis courts available for use this summer!

This project has always been envisioned as a long-term improvement that will be completed gradually over time as we balance it alongside the many other needs and priorities around camp. We’re excited about the progress being made and look forward to continuing to develop the courts in the years ahead.

New Water Stations

Thanks to a generous donation from the Junior Counselors of 1972, camp now has a beautiful new water fountain and water bottle filling station under the apple tree! We also added a brand new sink and handwashing station at the base of the Office.

Cross Country Running Track

Final touches are currently being completed on our new cross country running track! While much of the trail winds through the woods, campers will also notice portions of it cutting across the large Sports & Fitness field in the back of camp.

Rifle Range Improvements

The Rifle Range has received a major upgrade this year, including a brand new pulley system for all shooting stalls designed to improve both function and efficiency.

Dining Hall Addition

One of the final touches from last year’s Dining Hall project is now complete: a covered portico for unloading food deliveries into the kitchen during rainy weather. While many campers may never notice it, it will make a tremendous difference in daily kitchen operations.

New Canoe Docks

Campers will also notice brand new canoe docks along the waterfront this summer!

New Mattresses

We are excited to share that camp has brand new mattresses in the tents this year! The new mattresses are two inches thicker than previous versions, which means egg crates are no longer needed — and therefore should not be brought to camp.

And of course, there are many additional small improvements, touch-ups, repairs, and projects happening throughout camp as we prepare for another wonderful summer.
