ACA Tri-State 2024: What We Learned

What an adventure we had at the 2024 American Camping Association (ACA) Tri-State Conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey! As representatives of Alleghany, Elizabeth, Stephanie, Mary-Curtis, and I participated in this year’s conference filled with learning, networking, and inspiration. Now, as we settle back into our normal work routine, we are thrilled to share our outtakes and reflections from this transformative experience.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Certification

Prior to the conference, we had the privilege of participating in a pre-conference training and becoming certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid. Armed with the knowledge and skills to recognize and respond to mental health challenges among our campers and staff, we are better equipped than ever to provide a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment for all who walk through our gates. We feel confident with our new knowledge and the continuous guidance from our Wellness Counselor we are prepared to support our campers and counselors all summer long.

Staff Training Outtakes

One of the highlights of the conference was the extensive sessions dedicated to staff training and development. As seasoned camp professionals, we recognize the importance of nurturing the next generation of camp leaders. From workshops on effective communication techniques to innovative strategies for team building, we gained invaluable insights that will undoubtedly enhance our staff training programs back at camp. We are eager to implement these newfound methodologies and empower our counselors to excel in their roles as mentors and role models for our campers. Staff Training here we come!

Gen Z Camp Counselors: What They Need, and How We Can Support Them

In today’s ever-evolving landscape, understanding and engaging with Gen Z camp counselors is essential for fostering a vibrant and inclusive camp community. Through dynamic discussions and interactive workshops, we delved into the unique perspectives, preferences, and motivations of this generation of camp staff. Armed with this knowledge, we are committed to creating an environment at Camp Alleghany where every individual feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive. Our Camp Counselors are the heart and soul of Alleghany and we are dedicated to helping them thrive throughout the summer we feel confident that our staff training is well-rounded, ever-evolving, and full of learning.

Safety has always been our top priority at Camp Alleghany, and the conference provided us with an invaluable opportunity to review and refine our emergency procedures. From tabletop exercises simulating various crisis scenarios to in-depth discussions on risk management best practices, we emerged with a renewed sense of confidence in our ability to ensure the well-being of our campers and staff. Rest assured, we are more prepared than ever to handle any situation that may arise with grace, poise, and professionalism.

Behind the scenes, our office team plays a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation of Camp Alleghany. At the conference, we immersed ourselves in sessions focused on office best practices, exploring innovative strategies for streamlining administrative tasks, optimizing workflow processes, and harnessing the power of technology to enhance efficiency.
