A New Chapter for Camp Alleghany’s Church Services: Welcoming Pattie Ames

At Camp Alleghany, Sunday church services have always been a special time for us to come together, reflect, and connect. For years, Bonnie has led these heartfelt and impactful services, creating memories that many of us hold dear. As Bonnie steps into a well-deserved retirement, we’re excited to welcome Alleghany alumna Pattie Ames to take over this cherished role.

Now, it’s important to note that while Camp Alleghany isn’t a Christian camp, we do have some mild Christian undertones. These are all optional, of course. We have an optional Sunday church service, sing a blessing before meals, and recite the Lord’s Prayer during Assembly. These moments are here to offer a bit of peace and connection, but participation is always up to our campers and their families.

Bonnie’s services have been a beloved tradition, striking the perfect balance between thoughtful reflection and joyful song. Her legacy will always be a part of Camp Alleghany. As we transition, we’re confident that Pattie will continue this beautiful tradition with her own special touch.

Pattie Ames is no stranger to Camp Alleghany. She’s been a camper, counselor, head counselor, and is currently a Family Camper. Her bond with Alleghany runs deep, making her the perfect fit for this role.

Professionally, Pattie has over 30 years of experience as a lay professional in the Episcopal Church. Since July 2019, she has been the Canon for Christian Formation in the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia. In this role, she supports churches and institutions in various ministries, including Children’s Ministry, Campus and Young Adult Ministry, Adult Formation, Becoming Beloved Community, and Safe Church.

Before this, she served as the Director of Children’s Ministries at St Columba’s Episcopal Church in Washington DC for 21 years, at St John’s Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, VA for 4 years, and at Old Donation Episcopal Church in VA Beach, VA for 3 years. Pattie’s dedication extends beyond her professional life, as she’s involved with Forma, the formation planning team for Province 3, and serves on the Board of Trustees for Westminster-Canterbury, a senior living facility in Lynchburg, VA.

We are thrilled to share that Pattie performed her first Sunday Service last week at Alleghany. It was wonderful to see her return to ‘Ghany during Term Camp, and our campers absolutely loved it. They can’t wait for next Sunday to roll around!

Pattie will be carrying on the tradition of Sunday services, maintaining the beloved structure that Bonnie established while adding her own personal flair. We’re thrilled to have her and can’t wait to see how she makes these moments even more special.

Here’s to a new chapter and many more beautiful Sundays at Camp Alleghany!
