What a glorious long weekend, filled with labors of love, at Camp Alleghany! Twenty alumni and their friends/spouses shared 3 chilly nights (low 40s), sleeping in tents under the stars, eating in the dining hall, and enjoying campfires after taps. Days were filled with laughing out loud as we tackled many projects to help prep Alleghany for its 101st season!
The Camp Alleghany Alumni Association (CAAA) mission, to Unite/To Give/To Enrich, was the impetus for creating LOL Weekend in 2015. In the 9 years since we have brought together many alumni to complete odd jobs and tasks around camp to help the new summer season launch on a high! This year’s crew was no exception!
This Years Projects!
Beautiful new backdrop curtains were hung in the Play Hall. Flower beds in Junior Camp were planted, Arrows for Archery were fletched (stripped and new feathers attached), The Banquet Room was purged and cleaned. However, the most significant focus was on “flipping” the Counselor Lodge (CL) so that counselors have a welcoming space to rest, rejuvenate, and reflect with their peers. The inside was purged and cleaned. Handmade curtains were hung. New furniture was added while older items received a colorful facelift. A TV and DVD player were added. A separate “kitchen” area was established. Out back an inviting firepit was built surrounded by many colorful Adirondack chairs. Edison lights were hung under the CL back porch over an array of inviting seating and coffee-style tables. The BIG REVEAL was held Saturday evening before dinner and all attending counselors and Admin were visibly pleased! Being able to see the life of a counselor was a meaningful project for the alumni in attendance.
All Work, and Some Play!
Saturday dinner we enjoyed all together, as a “cookout” in the middle of Junior Camp as a Camp Alleghany family. Support staff members (including Green Team, housekeeping, and kitchen staff) ate and chatted together. A resounding game of “9 Square” was a highlight for the masses in attendance (both playing and watching) while others enjoyed corn hole and tetherball or simply sitting together and talking.
Until Next Year
The weekend was a tremendous success. Departing was with such sweet sorrow, knowing our time together was closing. However, LOL attendees left knowing that they had left a piece of themselves behind to enjoy the summer season at Camp Alleghany!
Join us next year for this remarkable weekend, free of cost, on the Greenbrier River in the shadow of the mountains, at the camp we all love best.
