Who was at Alleghany the first time of all? Mini Campers!
Yes indeed! Seventy young ladies, ages 7-10, experienced just a little taste of the ‘Ghany magic during the 10th season of Mini Camp! With tie dye as their color (a burst of all the colors they will enjoy in summers to come) they were active and eager from reveille to taps.
For many of these girls this was their first extended sleepaway camp opportunity. For this one week they were introduced to the songs and traditions of our beloved Alleghany in a nurturing and supported way with seasoned alumnae as their tent counselors and the vibrant, young term staff teaching their classes.
Evening activities included color wars, wacky races, scavenger hunts and a good old fashioned cookout (complete with s’mores and fireworks).
They read letters written to them from 2010 mini campers and wrote gypsy letters of their own to girls who will follow them in the summer of 2013.
On the final night, the Show of Shows, they celebrated many honored camp favorites like banquet, skits, dances, candlelights on their tent stoop, and being serenaded to sleep.
While their innocent laughter has been replaced by the squeals of over 200 first termers, the mark that these mini campers made on our hearts remains. We are eager to welcome them to term camp next year and share the full breadth of the Alleghany magic that three weeks hold.
As their very own song sums it up best,
They’ll be begging their parents to come back for years!
Mini campers, mini campers…we love Mini Camp!
