The last week of the first term was the busiest week and really made the term fly by!
Evening activity on Monday was a Blue v. Gray airband competition. It was followed by the ever mysterious four-year initiation. There were around 25 new Four Years initiated, but since it’s a secret ceremony, there isn’t much more to say about that…..4….4….4…4!
Tuesday greeted us with our final snack day of the term! This really has been a great addition to the schedule and I think we’ll be seeing it again next term. The girls loved taking a morning break for a little snack to help them get through their classes. Yummy treats included yogurt, juice, fruit, carrots, string cheese, and more!
The girls were filled with excitement as the day pressed on because of the much awaited Greenbrier dance. The seniors went to Camp Greenbrier and the juniors stayed at Camp Alleghany. In order to get a cookie, each girl and boy had to come with a date. It was the cutest thing that Alleghany has ever seen. They all paired up, held hands (on their own, I might add) and came forward knowing each others first names. Not only were they extra polite, but they actually began talking and dancing with one another!
We also had the Greenbrier vs. Alleghany Tennis, Rifle, and Archery matches during the day. The Girls won in Rifle but the boys beat us by one round in Archery! Fun day had by all!
Bringing back some traditions for the 90th summer we decided to do Backwards day. We started with Taps, flag lowering, and wearing blues and whites to breakfast. We reversed our classes starting with 4:10 and ending with 10:00. The entire camp wore their PJ’s to dinner, which was Ms. Hazel’s delicious pancakes! We ended the evening with reveille.
Wednesday evening activity was presented by the Drama Department. There were two precious plays by the Juniors and a mystery by the seniors. Following the production, Senior Camp had five special girls who received the title of Honor Girl.
Of course Thursday was lunch under the apple tree, which we all love so much. Hotdogs and peppermint patties! It doesn’t get much better than that. That night the Dance Department and staff presented the First Term Achievement dance show. It was awesome to say the least! The girls were anxious—costumes and make up on—and the show began. The Upstarts closed the show with a finale that no one will forget! After the final bow, Junior Camp announced the new Silver A’s for 1st term, and four lovely ladies were added as the cross to the A.
Friday began with the much anticipated Awards Assembly. There were many girls who walked out of there with a patch, showing that they were beyond dedicated to their classes this summer at camp. After the junior raid during rest hour, the Midways and Amelia hosted the Start Up graduation. These girls will be heading to Senior camp before they know it!
Babies’ boats campfire is always great, but this year the songs from the heads of camp were especially awesome.
Remembering everything that happened over the past three weeks was a great way toast the 1st term of 2011. Each camp presented the campers who received the Friendliest camper, Happiest Camper, and Achievement Cup. The Blues ended up racking up the points and pulling out a win for 1st term. It was a very close race, however! They only won by a few points. The evening ended with sending off the babies’ boats that each tent made, and a slide show of memories that we will hold dear forever.
As the counselor’s serenaded the camp to sleep, the campers were already dreaming about coming back next year.
