Dear ‘Ghany Community,
Undoubtedly you’re as overwhelmed as I am with all kinds of changes due to COVID-19. And now with the holidays coming up, and managing you or your children’s education or work through year end, there’s a lot on everyone’s plates.
I have a Pre-Kindergartener and a rambunctious two year old underfoot. My husband, Mike, and I work full-time as attorneys and in March, Mike opened his own firm. To say this year has been mind-boggling is an understatement!
Each day, I count my blessings that I’m still employed and that my children are still in school. Nevertheless, our monthly budget has changed and we spend money far differently than we did this time last year.
With all that’s happening in the world, I wish I had enough space in my brain to contemplate special year-end giving. Nonprofits have been hit hard by COVID and they need our help.
Making Giving Easy — and Camp Accessible to those In Need
Fortunately, my annual giving is on auto-pilot.
For several years now, I’ve made ongoing monthly gifts to my alma maters, church, and to the Camp Alleghany Alumni Association’s (“CAAA”) Lantern Scholarship Fund that’s managed by an alumna through a partnership with the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation.
Each month, a small amount is drafted from my PayPal or bank account and automatically transferred to the Lantern Scholarship Fund. I don’t have to remember to make a payment because it’s automatically done for me. And that is so nice.
It’s also much easier on my budget to plan for small gifts each month, rather than one large year-end gift. I’d much rather donate $20 a month to my favorite charity, rather than $240 every December (after purchasing all of my holiday gifts)!
We’re all busy, but I ask that you spend five minutes establishing an ongoing gift or making a one time end-of-year gift to the Lantern Scholarship Fund for campers in need.
Did you know that over the last five years alone, the CAAA has awarded 30 scholarships to our beloved campers totaling $51,500? In any given year, we award between 4 and 8 scholarships.
Our goal each year is to award scholarships to all of our deserving applicants whenever we can. But we can’t do so without your help. Our campers need their ‘Ghany friends and the serenity of Camp more than ever. Donating as little as $5 per month can have a big impact on CAAA’s ability to send girls to Camp. And doing so meets the CAAA’s mission for this scholarship to,
Assist those who otherwise could not financially attend Camp Alleghany, and to promote social, cultural, and economic diversity at camp.”
You can establish your ongoing monthly gift to the Lantern Scholarship Fund through the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation in two easy ways.
- Go to the Donate Page at the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation and check out via PayPal, being sure to name “CAAA Lantern Scholarship” as the recipient. When you do so you can choose the option to make your donation monthly.
- Contact ‘Ghany alumnae Anne Bowling Tuckwiller (’97-’05) directly at the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation and she’ll walk you through the process of setting up your monthly giving. If you prefer to call, dial: 304-645-5620
Old School Giving
If you’re not ready for monthly giving then I encourage you to join all of us on the CAAA Board of Directors in making a one-time end-of-year gift to the Lantern Scholarship Fund through PayPal or by check. This is a wonderful gift to future campers who otherwise would not be able to attend camp.
Be sure to write “CAAA Lantern Scholarship” in the note section of either your PayPal transaction, or in the memo line of a check by mail. Checks by mail can be sent to:
