As you will have noticed if you follow the Camp Alleghany Facebook page or Twitter, plenty of staff have already been hired for summer 2013. Senior camp especially is taking shape, and now that our head counselors, unit heads and midway mom have all been announced, it’s time to start looking forward to the summer! I can barely contain my excitement about working as part of such a fantastic team of counselors, so I thought I would share a few reasons as to why…
Your Head of Senior Camp this year is the wonderful Kathryn Baker. Having returned to camp as a Maroon in 2010, I was lucky enough to have her in my unit before she stepped up to being head of unit 3 last summer. She has an amazing vision for the summer and more than enough personality and persistence to make it work. Those who have worked with her before will know that she has a great sense of humor and a competitive streak…be relieved she is no longer your crab soccer rival!
I’m a mom! (well, sort of)
It’s me, Georgie O’Toole, who is your Assistant Head of Senior Camp/ and Upstart Mom this summer. I have a double role, assisting Kathryn in the day to day running of camp (note: this does not include feeding her grapes/fanning her when it’s hot or making sure she’s fully hydrated), and also being mom to my red hot 15s and 16s!
I’ve had upstarts as campers before (now they’re all grown up and ready to take on JC summer), and have gotten to know lots of you as head of Unit Two in 2011 and Unit One
in 2012, as well as teaching a bunch of you in dance.
For those I’ve yet to meet, rest assured I am psyched to get to know you! As an international NCCC I recognize what an honor it is to be given this opportunity, and I will absolutely help all you girls develop into confident leaders, whilst having an absolute blast.
The team’s shaping up
There is also a brand new cohort of unit heads this summer, each with completely different qualities, and each determined to make their unit the best it can be.
Kristin Baker’s kindness, approachability and positivity will make her a superb Unit Head, and ensure that she shines as a leader at Alleghany. The Baker contingent at camp is pretty stacked this year, but Kristin’s ability to nurture those around her and always put a smile on the faces of others will ensure she is a great asset to camp in her own right.
Few have a greater sense of sportsmanship than Holly O’Hara, and those in her unit can expect to have a lot of fun. I know she’ll be determined to come up with a few new traditions of her own, and that there’ll be a fair few silent midnight raves on her stretch of tent row. As I learned when she was in my unit last year, Holly is a truly valuable counselor to have on any team, and I am certain morale will be high in her unit.
Hope Morgan’s creativity is already pretty legendary in camp, and I am sure she will utilize all her artistic and musical talents to ensure her unit is unique and original. Having worked with her on dance staff for the past two summers, I have also seen her ability to encourage those around her. She will be sure to help those in her unit to flourish, and develop their own individual talents. I also can’t wait to hear her serenading her unit after taps.
Carlee Pennypacker will be taking on the final Unit Head role this summer. As a Tinge and former Midway Mom, Carlee has a lot of leadership experience and has worked with campers of all ages. Having been fortunate enough to work with Carlee for the entire time I was a Unit Head, I am well aware of her strength under pressure and supportive nature. Her unbeatable work ethic and love of Camp Alleghany’s traditions will make her an awesome Unit Head.
Rounding off the Senior Camp leadership team is our midway mom, Charlotte Robins. She has endless enthusiasm and plentiful experience with 13 and 14 year old campers, and I know it is important to her to make sure the Midways get real opportunities to take on responsibilities at camp – with a lot of fun to be had along the way! Charlotte is dedicated and tenacious, and if I were a 13 or 14 I would be super excited at the prospect of having her as my mom.
As you can see, Senior Camp is going to be a pretty special place. Plans are already in the works to ensure that this is the most memorable summer yet for campers and counselors alike, so if you’ve yet to register, or if you’re a counselor who has yet to apply, then what are you waiting for?! Don’t miss out on your chance to be a part of something great.
And, if you’re already planning on joining us in Senior Camp, welcome to team #O’Baker2013.
