How often do you think about Camp Alleghany? What brings back the memories for you?
Is it running into a fellow alumna somewhere you didn’t expect to see her? Finding a copy of your Songbook in your storage room? Or is it just the sights, sounds and smells of summer that evoke that excitement and anticipation you felt when you knew it was time to pull out the trunk and get ready to go?
For many of us, many years have passed since we attended camp as campers, but the memories are indelible. Until a few years ago, the only way to reconnect with camp was at Family Camp or on the web site. If you have a daughter, you might also have the chance to give her the same experience.
Now, we have a robust and thriving Camp Alleghany Alumni Association and I would like to encourage you to join – for only $25.00 a year.
We started this organization a few years ago with several purposes: to reconnect alumni (Green Team and parents, too!), to contribute to capital improvements to the camp infrastructure and to establish a scholarship program.
When I became involved, I had no children of my own and wanted a way to give back to this beloved place. Now we do, and now we have.
In the last few years, the Alumni Association has funded a new Play Hall porch, a new Dining Hall porch, a welcome sign on the camp side of the docks, a new dock shelter and fire pit, a canvas roof for a new rainy day shelter and activity venue (on the old Junior Camp tennis courts), and a deck at the old Junior Counselor Lodge site (which will be completed this fall).
We have also started the Lantern Scholarship Fund, which has funded the partial or full camp tuition for several campers for the last two years.
Camp is healthy and thriving – with long waiting lists each summer and a Mini Camp that provides a steady pipeline of new campers. As you know, the third generation of Dawsons is involved in managing the operations of camp. We want to ensure that we, as loyal alumnae, contribute to the continued success of this place, keep its alumnae engaged and help needy campers attend.
I hope you feel the same way. Won’t you join us and help us perpetuate this great legacy by becoming a member for $25.00? Just visit the Join, Renew, or Donate Page.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions or suggestions. My cell is (703) 505-3102 or send me an e-mail.
Hope to see you at camp this summer
