Camp Alleghany for Girls Opening Day

Term Camp Opening Day Drop-Off Procedures

On Opening Day, please follow the procedures outlined below.

Should there be a change in plans that would affect your arrival/departure (e.g., weather), you’ll receive an email, text or phone call from one of the directors prior to arriving at camp. Otherwise:

Coming by Car

Campers traveling by car will have signed up in advance for a time slot to arrive at camp (sent via email to all registered families). The time slots are hourly, beginning at 11:00 a.m. and ending at 2:00 p.m. We will not be able to let any families in before 11:00 a.m., and we ask that you only arrive within the hour time slot for which you have signed up.

When you reach the Camp Alleghany parking lot, stop at the green cabin and check in with a counselor who will point you in the direction of where to unload your car.

For the safety of all families and Camp Alleghany staff members in the parking lot, please strictly adhere to the counselors’ directions.

Drive to the opposite end of the parking lot where your luggage will be unloaded onto a trailer (see map).

After unloading, find a parking space on the way back toward the entrance to camp.

Your camper’s luggage will be taken across the river separately and dropped off at her tent (the American Camp Association — ACA —  requires that luggage and people must go across separately; we thank you for your patience).

All luggage will get to the tents, it may just take some time.

If you wish to help your camper make her bed, please pack her linens in her duffle bag and hand carry that duffle into camp when you come. Please do not pack a third bag for this purpose, as we limit our campers to one trunk and one duffle. Sending a third piece of luggage overcrowds the tents and makes packing for departure more difficult.

Before crossing the river, your camper’s temperature will be checked, she will be screened for lice, and you’ll be asked a few questions regarding her current health as well as her health over the school year.

Please note that pets are not allowed in camp on Opening or Closing Days.

We also respectfully request that you follow our Electronics Policy as soon as you enter Camp Alleghany’s property, and leave all of your camper’s electronic devices in your car. Additionally, please do not allow her to use your phone or other devices while in camp.

Please respect the time slot you signed up for, and do not arrive earlier than that hour-long window.

All parents must exit Camp Alleghany by 4:00 p.m. at the latest, as the campers will begin having meetings and activity sign-ups at 4:00.

Camp Side of the River

Once you’ve taken the barge over with your camper and are inside Camp Alleghany, please follow our structured procedures with the guide of the counseling staff to help you:

Your family/camper will be greeted by a counselor who will walk you to the Camp Store if you would like to make a stop there to purchase any items for your camper.

The counselor will then lead your family to the Infirmary where you have 2 options:

  • If your camper has medication to drop off or you need to discuss any concerns with the medical staff, you will go IN the Infirmary;
  • If you don’t have any medications or any need to talk to the medical staff, you will stop at the tent OUTSIDE the Infirmary.

Additionally, if your camper has a dietary restriction there will be one more stop with the Special Diets Chef to discuss her dietary needs and sign a dietary restriction contract.

After this the counselor will lead you to your camper’s tent where she will meet her own counselor and tentmates!

Once settled, you are free to leave camp and let the fun begin!
