The administrative and facilities teams, along with our summer kitchen staff, are at camp and living it up. And by living it up I mean, enjoying the serenity of camp while simultaneously doing lots of work around the grounds to ready camp for the season and…doing plenty of office related work too as we ready ourselves to welcome the 95th Summer of campers.
I thought I’d take a minute to bring you up-to-date on some of the work that Facilities Director Garrett O’Dell has been doing, and sharing a few pictures, too.
On the ground(s)
One of the most noticeable changes is at the Archery Range. We shifted its location slightly, moved the Archery Hut, and Garrett and his team have been working on building covered stalls like the Rifle Range.
The idea behind the changes in the Archery Range is that it now has two sides that are angled in different directions, so advanced shooters will shoot on one side and beginners on the other. This way there will be less waiting time for those who are finished and ready to retrieve their arrows and begin another round.
The other noticeable change is at the Tennis Courts. We got rid of the green wind screens and built beautiful new sturdy poles with new fencing attached to it. This is an ongoing project, but we’ll also be repairing the cracks in the courts for a smoother surface, and the perimeter is being edged.
This year the Infirmary Porch is totally new, with new flower beds around it as well. The interior of the Infirmary also got a much-needed remodel, which we’re still working on. During the Alumni L.O.L. Weekend this coming weekend, participants will be doing some finishing touches, so we’ll wait to show you photos after that.
The Counselors’ Lodge got a facelift on the exterior with a brand new roof and a new back porch cover, which has also been extended. Nothing like spiffing up a bit and shoring up essential infrastructure, too!
The newer deck at the entrance of camp has new, built-in benches now, a perfect place to relax and take a load off.
Cowbell Alley’s porch has an updated railing that is more safe, and the sidewalks around camp have all been edged for a sharp, fresh look. We’ve also got new flower beds all over camp, and we’re excited to get plants in them this weekend.
Half of the tents in Junior Camp have brand new tent floors and tent poles. This is an ongoing project and within a few years ALL of our tents will have new floors and poles.
We’ve also had the pleasure of meeting and working with the new kitchen staff. They’re so nice and friendly, and talented! And they can’t wait to meet everyone!
Overall, camp is looking awesome! The only problem is that it’s just way too quiet…we need our campers and counselors to arrive!
Just 10 days until Opening Day of our #95thSummer!
