This summer we held another special Vespers that was conducted by the orange members of our Non-Camper Counselor Club (NCCCs). Vespers is a time of reflection and so this group offered reflections on their time at camp so far.
The majorty of this year’s NCCCs were brand new to camp. What was so wonderful about the Vespers was how emotional and choked up they all got, talking about their experiences here!
In just a few short weeks they “get it” and it was just awesome to see. I have to admit they got me quite choked up!
In Their Words
Mariska shared about the joys and surprises of freedom from technology:
“You learn that life doesn’t revolve around cell phones and Instagram. You can be a child forever when you’re at camp…The main reason I return to camp each year is to see the campers grow. To see friendships form before my eyes. To see what I was like as a child too, before technology was involved.”
Erika, who was new this year, found much to enjoy,
“I’ve waded through shin-deep muddy water (#mudflood2016), chanted at the top of my voice, made a fool of myself every day, and laughed so much…”
Friendships moved Daisy’s heart. She shared a personal appeal,
“My ‘Ghany sisters, you are the most amazing, crazy, and beautiful people I could have ever had the pleasure to share my adventures with. You’ve helped me embody all the spirit of Alleghany and more!
Reliving these quotes is wonderful. However, re-capturing the specialness of a night like this is nearly impossible. It’s a case of “You just had to be there.” Hopefully that will give you cause to come next summer as a camper, return as a Family Camper, or keep checking in so you can apply to be a counselor for Summer 2017!
