Busy, hilarious, overwhelming, amazing, brief, infinite, and purple are a few words that begin to sum up the perfection that was my Junior Counselor (JC) summer.
For the past five years, I’ve built up these crazy expectations for my JC summer, which normally would just set me up for disappointment. However, this one time I wasn’t disappointed, not one bit.
My expectations were simultaneously not met and wildly exceeded; I’ve gained so much experience, created SO many memories, and grown so much in the past two months.
Being responsible for four girls 24/7, teaching classes every day, maintaining personal responsibilities (starting college in a week…yikes!), making sure everyone is having fun, and trying to get a few minutes to myself so that I can be at my best can sometimes be hard.
So let me tell you some of the ups and downs you can expect as a counselor or a JC.
Sometimes you’ll be so frustrated you’ll just want to scream and kick things and run home. And then you’ll get a letter from a 12-year-old camper from the previous term (not YOUR camper, I might add) praising you for being a wonderful counselor and saying she can’t wait to see you again next summer — suddenly your day is perfect again.
Or maybe the 8-year old you’ve been instructing in Rifle will finally get a bullet on the target after a week of trying, and she’ll hug you so tightly you’ll feel like you’re breaking but also being pieced together, and your happiness will overflow.
It’s moments like these that just make being a counselor so worthwhile. Because there’s no denying it; there will be times when you want to go home, when you want to be done. But those moments are few and far between, and the good moments with campers happen everyday.
I couldn’t have gotten through my JC summer without my eight amazing campers (four each term); they brightened all of my days and taught me so, so much.
I really couldn’t have gotten through this summer without my sisters, the Dancing Queens of 2014. I can’t put into words how much you guys mean to me, honestly.
And to Dana, our perfect JC mom, we can never thank you enough for teaching us how to be great counselors, maybe even as great as you — oh wait, not possible! 🙂
Anyway, nostalgia aside, JC summer really is perfect, and so worth it. It has been my best summer at camp so far, and every purple minute has a permanent place in my heart.
