Dear ‘Ghany Community,
First I’d like to thank our previous Lantern Scholarship donors on behalf of the eight ‘Ghany girls you helped to send to Camp Alleghany for Girls in 2018. Your past generosity helped the Lantern Scholarship fund $12,500 of financial assistance to these eight deserving girls! This is an increase from $7,000 for four girls in 2017, and $6,000 in 2016.
And now I’d like to reach out to the wider ‘Ghany Community to tell you more about this important scholarship program, as well as a matching funds challenge.
The Lantern Scholarship program was launched in 2012. Last year we raised over $43,000, up from $17,500 in 2016, and $12,500 in 2015. The fund has had impressive growth and now stands at a value of about $125,000. With the help of the markets we have been able to grow the fund while also funding close to $30,000 in scholarships.
While the growth and size of the fund is impressive, we will need to increase it significantly to make it sustainable over the long term.
An endowed fund typically supports scholarships representing 5% of its (the fund’s) total value. Camp tuition is about $4,000, so to sustainably endow just one scholarship, the fund would need to have an $80,000 value. In order to sustainably support the $12,500 we gave out last year, the fund would need to have a value of $250,000. This represents the equivalent of only about three full scholarships. We would like to be able to provide even more support than that each year.
This is why we’re asking for your support again.
At the same time that you will be receiving this blog post and considering your gift to the Lantern fund, hopeful young girls and their likely nervous parents will be filling out applications for the Lantern Scholarship. As we immerse ourselves in the season of contemplation and giving, I hope that you will join me and my fellow board members in helping to give these girls and their families something for which to be thankful, a blessing that we all share, which is a connection to Camp Alleghany.
In that spirit, the board of the Camp Alleghany Alumni Association hopes that you will consider making a gift to The Lantern Scholarship fund in 2018.
To help inspire your generosity, the Camp Alleghany Alumni Association Board and I are challenging you with our Fall Matching Gift Campaign that will run until December 31s, 2018. CAAA Board members and I have pledged to match up to $3,500 in donations to the fund. We, as a Board, are committed to give back to our Alleghany through the Lantern Scholarship fund.
The most convenient way to give is by visiting the online Lantern Scholarship Fund page. Once there click: Donate to the Scholarship Fund. Clicking this will take you to the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation website where you can click “Donate.” On that donate page, please be sure to note the CAAA Lantern Fund in the message box provided which says “Write a note (optional).” If you don’t write in CAAA Lantern Fun there, it will not be properly credited to the fund.
But, if you prefer, alternately you can make out a check payable to the Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation (GVCF) with CAAA Lantern Fund in the memo line of your check. Mail that to:
PO Box 1682
Lewisburg, WV 24901
Finally, if you would like to make a gift of appreciated stock, please contact Courtney Smith at email@example.com to help you with that process. As a reminder, your donation is tax deductible.
On behalf of the Camp Alleghany Alumni Association board, thank you!
— Jed Kincaid, Lantern Scholarship Chair and VP of Development, CAAA Board
