My experience as a new counselor at Camp Alleghany has been amazing. I’ve always known that I wanted to work at a summer camp in America and when I got an interview date with Elizabeth, I knew this was the chance I had been hoping for! After my interview, I constantly dreamed I’d be hired and able to work here. I checked out the website and got so excited to possibly be spending my summer in West Virginia.
Once I was offered the job I was so excited! I couldn’t wait to finish college to get ready and prepare for America.
On my way
Meeting all the other BUNACER’s at the airport was an adventure and yet nerve wracking at the same time. The journey was fine, but when we got to camp and crossed the barge everyone grew equally nervous. I was so happy I wasn’t the only one.
Looking back now, the experiences I’ve been able to have, have been amazing. It’s really changed me for the better.
I’ve always wanted to work with children. Here at Camp Alleghany I’ve been able to work with all age groups. It’s been wonderful to see how different girls and different ages handle the challenges of acquiring new skills and techniques. Just watching them and guiding them has taught me a lot, too, strengthening my teaching and communication skills.
Brains and beauty
And the scenery? I wake up everyday to a picturesque paradise, and go to bed under the stars every night. It’s something I never thought I’d be able to do and has made me appreciate this experience that much more.
The people I’ve met on this journey are truly the most diverse and delightful people I’ve ever met. I can’t believe how strong each and every woman is that works here, especially Elizabeth and Bonnie, both of whom I look up to as role models. I’ve seen first hand how much love and hard work they put into this camp. The girls that work here always have a smile on their faces and are so friendly that it makes my day, everyday.
I feel so lucky to have been given the opportunity to work at Camp Alleghany and now I know where I want to spend my summers from now on!
