I’m standing with a child’s rubber rain boot raised above my head trying to chase a mouse out of Uncle Bill’s Cabin while Jane Anne (McJunkin) Randolph and Julia (Kincaid) Hollon are screaming and jumping on chairs. We’re all women in our 40’s with children of our own but tonight it feels like we’re 17 again as we laugh and laugh until our sides hurt.
I’ve been blessed to spend the past three summers running the Store at Camp Alleghany and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting to know other staff members, campers, and counselors. This summer has been a particular treat because I’ve been reunited with Jane Anne and Julia who were in my JC group in 1986. Jane Anne is the Head Hopper this summer, Julia is the Infirmary Assistant, and I run the Store. Although we haven’t seen each other in over 20 years, it’s as though no time has passed. The three of us have spent many an afternoon hiking to Twin Tulips, swimming in the river, and reminiscing.
Although I have friends from high school, college, and beyond whom I love dearly, there is nothing like a camp friend. I feel so fortunate to be able to share another summer with two women who were part of some of the finest memories of my life.
