Camp Alleghany has been hiring international staff for over thirty years.
This always interesting and unique group of counselors has helped teach campers about different cultures from all around the world and has always been more than excited about the American culture and the games and songs that are sung here at camp.
This year there are 13 international staff, mostly from parts of United Kingdom— but also all the way from Australia! And I am one of them, hailing from Liverpool!
The international counselors are spread over Junior and Senior Camp so that both camps get the benefit of their contributions.
During the last three weeks we have been learning and singing all the songs possible! We have been helping teach classes and getting to know all the campers, which has been more than fun, it’s been a real treat.
How we got here
Having the opportunity to live and work at Camp Alleghany has been a huge opportunity and an engaging experience which we all greatly appreciate. The process of learning about the camp, applying, getting hired, and then executing our trips to the States was just as much of a learning experience as being here.
A lot of campers and staff have asked us how we managed to get placed in a camp where we would work. There is a website called Camp Leaders and they have contacts with nearly every camp in America, meaning that if you’re qualified and professional, it’s almost guaranteed that you can get a job in a camp anywhere in America.
We had to fill out an online application first, and go to a one-on-one interview. After that it was the waiting game as to when and who would contact you about a job at their camp.
Applicants get notified when we are “on review,” which means that a camp is looking through our application. If they liked what they saw then they contact you for a video interview.
Camp Allegheny’s Program Director Taylor Fellows was our interviewer. She asked us questions about what we would do in different scenarios in camp to see how well we think about meeting the needs of campers and remaining flexible and creative.
I know all of us who are here are so glad we passed the test!
But I’m sure you’d like to know more personally about our international staff, so I asked around the international team for general information on themselves and this is what they came up with!
