When the clock turned to midnight on January 1st, 2014 it became the year that Camp Alleghany will be 92 years old! Ninety-two years and going strong, I might add!
So in the spirit of all that is new with the new year, I thought I’d bring you up to date on what’s new for us this year.
Old friends and new
Of course, our new Junior Counselors will be informed of their selection in the coming days, an exciting moment for us and for them! We’ll also be welcoming back some “old” — former — counselors and welcoming in new ones. (We’re still taking applications for counselors — until February 1, 2014 — so apply now.)
Two important new people to camp in 2014 are our new Office Manager Louise (read all about her here) and…
…Baby Shreckhise! Due in April, the newest addition to the Dawson-Shreckhise clan will have his or her first summer at camp among loving hands and three generations of family. I love the thought of my baby being ensconced in the gentle rhythms of the camp setting with wide and glorious nature all around and the song of the Greenbrier River lulling us along.
Breaking new ground
For summer 2014 we’re rebuilding several of the tent platforms and redoing curtains in the showers. (Read more here.) Not only that but we’ve built a brand new Green Team Cabin and the Office Building. The upgrades will be great for the staff and the functioning of all things during camp.
And, as I also discussed in a recent blog, Facilities Manager Garrett O’Dell is building a large structure on half of the Junior black top area that will be a designated rainy day structure, making it possible for us to adapt to rain more easily and so expand our rainy day activities.
There will be a new camp tee shirt and it just might be designed by you! We’re holding a tee shirt design contest and you have until January 15th to submit an entry. Can you think of a better way to use your remaining holiday days and your free time? 🙂
One new change that’s afoot is that we’ll no longer be selling any food in the Camp Store. (I’ll do a full blog on this soon to tell you why we came to this decision. But I thought a little heads up was in order so that you don’t pass up milk and cookies thinking you’ll be buying a candy bar instead!) 😉
Of course I’ve talked about some new evening activities that are on the drawing board. We’ve got lots of ideas up our sleeves and, as always, simply can’t wait for Camp to begin!
The newest new of all
And all that brings me to the most important new thing of 2014…New Campers!!!!
Which bright new faces will journey for the first time over the barge and onto the shore of Camp Alleghany? Which curious girls will peel back the tent flaps, lay their trunks out, and dress their cots all anew? Whose laughter and mirth will be caught unawares during counselor activity skits? Who will fall in love with canoeing or rifle or singing? Who will make new best friends and drink her first bug juice and find herself enraptured and melancholic during Babies Boats?
Who will discover that she is a ‘Ghany Girl?
It is all so fresh and new. Happy New Year to you all!
