I guess it started with a conversation among some alums during Family Camp last summer one evening, when we were talking about ways campers could give back to the local community — the Lewisburg/Greenbrier area — while they, the girls, are in residence at camp.
We asked each other how we could help inspire the girls to give back, and wondered if there was something that we could start small with?
Thus was born the idea of the Ghany We Will Give project. From there I asked Laura Gorsuch to be the chair because she’s an alum, from Lewisburg, and had asked to be more involved with camp in some capacity. She did the research and wrote the letter below. So I’ll let her explain more:
Ghany we will give
Dear Parents and Campers of 2014,
Being a native of Lewisburg, as well as a ’Ghany Girl, I have always felt lucky to be from the beautiful town and area that so many of you have come, or will come, to know as home away from home. While we may only spend 8 weeks of our lives in the Greenbrier Valley, camp wouldn’t be what it is without the love and constant support of the surrounding community.
In the fall, a new idea was born, and as the chair, I am honored and proud to announce Camp Alleghany’s newest campaign, “Ghany We Will Give.” Named after one of our cherished Campfire songs, our hope for this new initiative is to provide opportunities where our campers will continue to uphold our camp philosophy and core values while teaching them the importance of giving back to others. We certainly take pride in our camp facilities and grounds by doing things such as Paper Pickup and Inspection, but we feel it is time for us to reach across the river and begin giving back to the community that has taken care of us for over 90 summers.
This summer on each Opening Day, whether it be Mini Camp, 1st Term, or 2nd Term, we are asking that each camper bring one or more canned food or non perishable item(s) along with them to camp. There will be collection bins in the parking lot when you check in where your camper will be able to place the item before crossing the barge into camp. At some point within the first week, the staff (and hopefully some lucky girls!) will deliver the food to the Lewisburg, White Sulphur Springs and Ronceverte food lockers.
While we will begin this summer by taking very small steps, we have plans to continue to grow the program each summer. Please help us by joining in this wonderful cause as ‘Ghany gives to those in need in the Greenbrier Valley.
With much gratitude,
We invite you to help encourage your daughter to participate — wouldn’t 100% participation be awesome and amazing! Help inspire your daughter to always think of how she can be a giving member of the things she’s involved in. Who knows, one day that Ghany Girl might be a great philanthropist, volunteer, community organizer or just always ready to lend a hand and her heart!
