Greetings, Alleghany families!
This year has flown by, and I know we’re all getting excited to cross the Greenbrier River, maybe for the first time! Before we do, I’d like to announce the annual ‘Ghany We Will Give campaign and the specific details for its version this summer.
‘Ghany We Will Give is a way for campers, counselors, and alumni to give back to the Greenbrier County community for its years of hospitality. Last year, we raised over $2,500 for the Relay for Life Chapter of Greenbrier County, meeting our overall camp goal and earning a Bronze Medal.
Now in the program’s third year, we’re honored to be working with Snacks in Packs and Energy Express Summer Reading Program. Both of these programs are part of the outreach ministry for Lewisburg United Methodist Church. Their mission is to provide the kids enrolled in the programs with 5 pre-packaged food items every Friday. These are students who might not otherwise have food to eat over the weekend.
Snack in Packs serves roughly 120 students per week in Lewisburg alone, and approximately 800 students total for Greenbrier County during the year. During the summer, it serves over 200 students weekly. By supporting this important cause, our girls will help ensure that children in the surrounding areas do not go hungry.
Our hope is that every camper will bring something to donate as she enters camp on opening day. Please use the following list as a guide when choosing your item(s):
- Granola or cereal bars (e.g. Nature’s Valley or Nutrigrain)
- Fruit cups/pouches (applesauce and mandarin oranges are the kids’ favorites!)
- Peanut butter or cheese filled crackers (e.g. Nabs)
- Raisins or nuts (individual small boxes or packages)
- Pretzels (lunch size serving bags)
- Plastic spoons
- Cash donations are accepted ($50 feeds one child for the entire year)
Due to health codes, Snack in Packs volunteers are not able to handle the actual food. It’s imperative that every item be individually wrapped in a pre-packaged wrapper or container, and come ready to be self served by the students.
Thank you in advance for your support, and please don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions.
With much gratitude,
— Laura K. Gorsuch, ‘Ghany We Will Give Chair, Camp Alleghany for Girls
