What Are Family Retreats?
All the details on Family Retreats are available on our Family Retreats webpage.
Any further questions that might come up are addressed in the questions on this FAQ.
What food will be served? How will it be served?
Meals: During your stay, three meals a day are provided in our Dining Hall, served cafeteria style by our kitchen staff in accordance with West Virginia’s food service guidelines.
Tables: Family units are assigned a Dining Hall table to use throughout their stay.
Utensils: During this special time of COVID, we will need to use all disposable utensils and dishes.
Maintenance: Families will bus their own tables, throwing away all disposables, and then spraying and wiping down their tables before leaving the Dining Hall for each meal.
Menus: We're still working out menus for each week. If you've been to Alleghany in the past, you'll definitely see a few 'Ghany favorites in the menu! At lunch, there will always be an option for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
How do we indicate special dietary requirements?
While we're typically able to accommodate almost every dietary restriction in a normal year at Camp Alleghany, this year we're only able to accommodate gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegetarian diets.
On the Family Retreats registration form there's a space to communicate any of the above dietary needs. We'll follow up with your family prior to your arrival.
If we can't accommodate your request, we'll let you know. If you have any questions, please call us at (304) 645-1316.
May I bring my own snacks? How can I prepare them?
Yes, please feel free to pack your own extra food or snacks as we will not be able to provide snacks in-between meals during the day.
Food containers: Please remember to bring airtight containers to store your food in, and to avoid attracting animals. You may also bring a cooler to store cold snacks and beverages.
Glass: Glass bottles are never allowed in the river.
Cooking: You may bring a small non-electric BBQ if you wish to cook in designated areas. You may also cook over the open fire at any of our fire pits provided that you are six feet away from other families during that time.
May I bring and consume adult beverages?
Adult beverages are allowed during our Family Retreats for guests age 21 or older.
Responsible drinking: We expect that you will be of legal age to drink and that you will practice responsible drinking.
Acquisition and storage: Guests are welcome to bring alcohol in a cooler, or purchase alcohol in town during your stay.
Activities and drinking: After consuming any adult beverage, you will not be allowed to partake in any Archery or firearms (if offered) activities.
Glass: Glass bottles are never allowed in the river, nor is any alcohol.
Alcohol, safety, and behavior: Alcohol is a presence during our traditional Family Camp week, and it is allowed at Family Retreats, too, yet not all guests choose to partake. We ask you to be mindful of others, and aware that children are present.
If an Alleghany staff member feels a guest’s safety is at risk due to inebriation, he or she reserves the right to obtain help. Camp Alleghany reserves the right to ask any guest behaving irresponsibly to leave early without a prorated refund.
What safety and precautionary measures will be taken this summer?
We are closely monitoring local and/or federal health and safety guidelines and will continue to adjust our policies and procedures accordingly. The health and safety of our staff and camp families are a top priority for us. We have written up our plans to keep our staff and camp families safe. Hand sanitizer: Please bring a good supply of hand sanitizer for your family’s personal use.
Masks: We ask that you consider having each member of your family bring a face mask to wear when appropriate, if that is comfortable for you.
Do we need to follow social distancing at Family Retreats?
Yes, proper social distancing between families must be observed while at Family Retreats.
Housing and Dining: Families will be living 30 feet apart and dining six feet apart.
Activities and enjoying the grounds: Family units should expect to stay at least six feet apart from other family units during your entire stay.
Respect for social distancing: We expect all those who come to Family Retreats to be fully on board with our policies and procedures during this unusual time and to support all our efforts at safety and enjoyment for all guests.
What if the session I want is not available?
If the session you would like is full, please give us a call — 304.645.1316 — or shoot us an email. As we have cancellations, we will fill the spaces in the order in which they are received and can let you know.
Will you open more sessions later in the summer or Fall?
If you're interested in Family Retreats and none of the current weeks offered fit your family schedule, please let us know your interest. Email us and we will get you on an interest list and waitlist where you will receive priority enrollment if we open more weeks.
If you would have interest in Fall Weekends please let us know. We're considering fall options as well. As we create new programming and ways to get you to camp, we're looking at all possibilities and would love to know what your family would be interested in.
What is the Cancellations & Refunds Policy?

What are the Check-In and Check-Out guidelines?
All arrivals will take place in the afternoon of your arrival day between 1:00 and 4:30pm.
You will be sent an online sign-up to secure your arrival time. We know that traffic and other unforeseen circumstances may cause you to arrive late, but we ask that you make every effort to arrive on time to keep our arrivals schedule on track.
Upon arrival all guests' temperatures will be taken and screening questions will be asked.
Families are responsible for unloading their own vehicles in the parking lot and loading their luggage into one of Camp Alleghany's luggage trucks. The trucks will take the luggage across via barge and drive to the family 's assigned tent or cabin, and families will unload their own luggage from the trucks.
All departures will take place on the morning of your departure day, between 8:30am and 12:00pm. Again, families will be responsible for loading their own luggage on and off of the truck.
Will there be quiet hours?
