With the new year, the Camp Alleghany Alumni Association (CAAA) renewal drive is going on again! It’s time to join or renew. And with new leadership at the helm, I know the board is eager to reach out to you during this membership drive season.
First, about those board changes.
Beth Anne Clark-Thomas just stepped down from her role as CAAA Board President, but is staying on as Treasurer. Taylor Kiland is now the President and Wynne Patrick joined our board this year. As I always like to mention, the mission of the CAAA is to
…support Camp Alleghany’s mission by uniting, giving, and enriching alumni, friends, and campers through loyalty and stewardship.
You can read more detail about the CAAA on our main website. But in the meantime, I want to share a little about their annual membership drive. To do so, I thought it would be easiest to quote in full from B.A.’s outgoing letter:
Happy New Year!
It was an amazing year for the CAAA as we awarded our first Lantern Scholarships! Two young ladies were able to enjoy an Alleghany summer experience thanks to the generous support of the CAAA sponsored Lantern Scholarship Fund. It’s a simple way to give back to “the camp we all love best” and it enables young women the opportunity to have a life-long impact from their summer across the river! Many thanks to all who contributed to the 2013 fund (see list of donors below).
The enhancement projects funded from 2012 budget received tremendous affirmation by all! The new waterfront entrance welcomes campers and visitors with a gorgeous rock/canoe sign, which is placed in front of a greatly enlarged and architecturally appealing shelter. The 2013 Green Team gratefully participated in the tear down of the nearly collapsed and far-too-tiny shelter it replaced.
Family Camp CAAA sponsored events were well attended and much enjoyed by members and guests…wine tasting, happy hours, fireworks, and a silent auction were capped off with a crazy fun blue grass band night of great music and dancing!
Fundraisers this past year included more sales of the serenaders CD, vintage black and white camp photo 8×10 prints, and a silent auction of beautiful watercolors of iconic spots around camp. Please consider supporting future CAAA fundraiser projects as these enable us to offer special events and fund the future enhancement projects. Coming in 2014, resultant of this year’s fundraisers, are the construction of a deck where the Junior Crafts Lodge once stood, and a covered rainy day shelter set up on the former Junior tennis courts.
Your volunteer board loves camp as you do. Representing many decades and roles of camp’s history we seek to be your voice in the support of Camp Alleghany and it’s strong future. A “shout out” goes to departing board member and former Green Teamer, Matt Gorsuch! He has served diligently as our Treasurer and we are thankful for his contributions. With much enthusiasm we welcome to the board a new member- for a three year term- long time camper, counselor and family camp staffer…Wynne Patrick!
I remain grateful to have seen this organization come to fruition and to participate with great colleagues in facilitating its growth and the development of a sustainable structure. Beginning with the charter group’s two year foundation which led to these last four years as an incorporated association I have been humbled by the energy, selfless service, and generosity of the combined talents of alumni and friends supporting the CAAA. As I step down as President I feel great joy in knowing that there are many others whose goal is to sustain the momentum we have collectively begun.
Please reach out to your board members! Ask how you can be involved! Catch the magic!
