We all know there’s no place better than camp. (Okay, I’m a little biased here.)
But even so, sometimes you just got to get away and this past weekend our Upstarts were the lucky ones as they went to a play in downtown Lewisburg. They rolled out the red carpet and saw…Completely Hollywood at The Greenbrier Valley Theater!
They had all the glamor while the rest of camp played Blue/Gray Gold Rush. (Okay, guess what? We had a lot of fun back at camp, too, you globetrotting starlets!)
There has been lots of exciting things with the blues and grays. Both teams took time this weekend to learn some oldy but goody songs. Like this one:
Come Play the Game
Come play the game, for all you’re worth
Come play it fast and well.
Put a lot of good camp spirit
In song and shout and yell.
With an ever-nearing victory,
With but a single aim,
For the glory of Alleghany
We’ll always play the game.
(Harvard Victory Song)
This helped with the swim meet on Sunday afternoon!
More songs and celebration
Sunday night was the Midway Vespers. In light of the 90th year celebration at Camp Alleghany (hey, we’re almost a centenarian, er, uh, celebrating our centennial), the campers mentioned which favorite traditions they would put in a time capsule. We were so impressed with the many things that they love about camp:
- Flag raising
- 4th of July Carnival and fireworks
- Writing letters instead of using technology
- Camp allowing us to focus on friendships without the media and technology of our daily lives
- Lunch under the apple tree
- All white on Sunday
- Activities with Camp Greenbrier
- Evening activities
- Singing songs
- Babies Boats
- Upstart Vespers
- Hearing letters from campers from last summer
- Counselor serenade
- Milk and cookies
- Blues and whites
- Living in tents!
Ah, camp life…
The weather has been hot most of the past couple of day. There’s been lots of free swims!
July 4th was the exception, trying to rain on our parade. Not that we let a little rain stop us. We had our carnival (with a few hijinx from the Green Team), our movie night and fireworks in style!
