With a new season upon us we have some new staff members and we want to tell you all about them.
Jeanette Foster, an alumna and long time loyal supporter of Camp Alleghany, has been hired as our new Office Manager for the summer, and we couldn’t be more excited!
Jeanette comes with a raft of experience to rival the most seasoned Alleghany worker, and she also holds a very special place in my own heart. She was my counselor when I was 7 (so you know she made a deep impression on me) and was a Head Counselor throughout many of my summers at camp.
She also recently served a term on the Camp Alleghany Alumni Association board, helping that team steward many significant projects — such as our new scholarship program — through to completion.
We’re so excited to have her leadership, insight, and love for Alleghany back at camp this summer!
As you know, the energetic and unstoppable Taylor Fellows is still our new Program Director. But big news – she’s pregnant! She’ll be having a baby girl in May (a new ‘Ghany Girl, of course). So as you can understand, she won’t be able to be at camp this summer.
Stepping in as Interim Program Director is Ellie Frazier, who returns to Alleghany after spending three years in Rwanda in the Peace Corps. I say “returning to Alleghany,” because like other of our “old-hat” pros, Ellie was a Head Counselor in 2009 before heading to Rwanda.
She’s very excited to be back at Alleghany and with Taylor’s able preparations in place, Ellie can confidently execute her new duties while bringing some creativity that’s uniquely her own! Welcome back, Ellie.
One of the neat aspects of our administrative leadership team this summer is that between the above two people and myself, we have three “camp generations” represented. Jeanette was my counselor when she was a JC, and I was Ellie’s counselor when I was a JC! In the business world they call that rare kind of institutional memory — and how it positively impacts the organization — pure gold! But around here, we just call it Camp Alleghany’s Business-As-Usual!
We’ll definitely be getting a picture of the three of us together this summer!!
Food Service Manager
On a bittersweet note, many of you know that Hazel retired last summer. So many of us are so sad about this because we’ll miss her so much. But we’re happy for her to enjoy her time in the sun!
But how to fill her beloved shoes?
Well, last summer we had kitchen employee named Alene who really enjoyed working at Alleghany and has a lot of previous leadership experience in food service management. When Hazel retired, we interviewed several people for the position, including Alene, and Alene came out on top!
We’re thrilled to welcome Alene back to Alleghany in this new position. And don’t worry, she promises to keep cooking up all of our old favorites (she did work with the master, you know!), but she also has lots of ideas for new dishes as well, so start licking your chops for that.
We are hoping Hazel will grace us with her presence for Banquet and Family Camp. And really, as the evidence above shows, which Alleghany alum — whether camper or staff — can stay away for long? We’re sure she’ll at least stop by.
Here’s looking forward to another active, happy, inventive and joyful camp season. See you soon!
