As you know, our Counselors are the hardest working folks in the business! They have what seems like 24-hour shifts, seven days a week — though it’s not quite what it seems. There are daily breaks, days off, and even overnights away, of course, and counselors make the most of it by seeing and doing summer things during their window of personal time.
But with such a short and acute amount of time in which summer camp is scheduled, a lot happens in a tight period of time, including four major transitions — the arrival of Mini Campers, the arrival of First Term campers, the “Changeover” when Second Term campers arrive, and then the arrival of Family Camp (for those counselors who remain for that optional final week).
One of the biggest transitions is Changeover, when counselors still have some work to do, but the scale is lessened a bit.
In fact, most of our counselors have time off during Changeover, but four stayed for Changeover in exchange for extra time off during Second Term. But those four definitely don’t have time leading up to Changeover to plan a whole day of Changeover activities for our campers. And that’s where the Changeover “Mom” comes in.
This year we decided to try something new during Changeover. We hired one of our alums — Beth Rusnak — who never gets as much time as she would like at camp, and had her take on the role of Changeover Mom. She was thrilled to do it, and with everyone else already spoken for in other responsibilities, Beth’s singular focus really allowed the Changeover experience to shine.
Beth planned for and organized different activities and worked with those counselors staying in camp to give our Full Term campers a fun-filled day! As she explains it,
Changeover is a busy time at Alleghany. We tearfully say goodby to our First-Termers and prepare to welcome our Second-Termers the next day. Those girls attending both terms have the option of leaving camp with their families or to stay in camp.
On the morning of Changeover, for those campers who stayed, the girls trekked around camp on a scavenger hunt for hidden goodies, ultimately making their own trail mix to snack on throughout the day. The Reese’s Pieces and M&Ms were a big hit!
Next up was decorating flip-flops to wear later at their ‘Ghany Spa Day.
After Rest Hour, the beautiful day allowed us to have a wild outdoor paint splash blast!
We filled buckets with washable paint and water and had a huge squirt gun fight. Every color of Alleghany was represented on all the girls.
Then off to the river for a free swim!
Once the pump guns were cleaned of paint, we continued the squirt gun battle in the river.
The highlight of the day was the ‘Ghany Spa. The girls relaxed with facials, manicures, and pedicures expertly given by the counselors. Flavored water umbrella drinks enhanced the spa day feel.
Feeling relaxed and hungry, we headed to the Dining Hall to feast on pizza followed by ice cream sundaes. We capped the day off by enjoying movie time during a sleepover in the Playhall with the counselors.
Everyone had a great time, enjoying their special Changeover Day!
One term is great at Camp Alleghany for Girls, whether First of Second Term. But Full Term, with a Changeover blast, a spa day, movie, and a sleepover, well, pretty cool, huh?
Next summer your daughter might be part of the fun and camaraderie, too, whether as a young first-time Mini Camp attendee, or joining us for either or both of our Term Camps. My FREE, downloadable E-book will help familiarize you with the joys and benefits of summer camp for kids today. It’s called 3 Reasons to Begin Your Child’s Sleepaway Summer Camp Journey Early.
I hope you’ll enjoy it (and feel free to contact me with any questions)!
